A heart doctor and nursing care close to home. The same doctor year after year, who knows what your heart has been doing. An appointment you can keep without planning the whole day around it. Your own bed at the end of it.

In 46 counties across 20 states you have both nearby, and any one of them could be the home you grow old in.2

We measure the skilled nursing facilities and the cardiologists in the county, from the federal health workforce file, against the people living there, so that a small county is judged on the same footing as a city. A doctor nearby is not an appointment: even where there are plenty, a practice can have its books closed.

What stands out

  • 1,956 of 3,143 US counties have no cardiologist at all, which is more than half the country.1
  • In most states, the typical county has no cardiologist at all.1
  • Only 46 of 3,143 US counties have both skilled nursing and a heart doctor nearby.2
  • Counties with both kinds of care nearby are in 20 different states.2

Best states to age in place

Two towns an hour apart. Same state, same weather, same tax code. In one, the heart clinic is fifteen minutes away and a check up is a morning. In the other, it is two hours each way, and an older person starts leaving longer between visits.1

What an older person needs nearby to stay at home

A cardiologist is a doctor an older person sees for years rather than once. A clinic close to home is the difference between an appointment and a day out, and it is the same clinic whether the news is good or bad.1

After a fall, an older person may need weeks of skilled nursing before going home. With a facility nearby, those weeks are spent close to home, and the front door at the end of them is their own.1

Nursing homes and heart doctors by county

Skilled nursing and a heart doctor within reach of the same front door is unusual. 647 counties are best supplied for skilled nursing, 596 for heart care, and 46 counties have both at once.2

Plenty more places have nursing care nearby. Start there and narrow as you go.
