Make this a wish: Where Might I Live highlights US counties where you might find it, in search of YOUR happy place. Combine wishes for healthcare, prices, and more.

Schools that spend the most on each student. A district that can hire when a teacher leaves. A bus route that keeps running in a tight year. The things a school year needs, bought in the year it needs them.

673 of 3,137 US counties are in the group that spends most, across 45 states.2

We take what every public school system in a county spends in a year from the federal school finance survey, and set it against the students it teaches. Money spent is not money in a classroom: the figure is everything it costs to run a school year, buses, heating and buildings included, which is why a remote district can spend the most in the country and still look like any other school from the inside.

What stands out

  • Counties in the highest spending group are in 45 of the 51 states.2
  • The highest spending county in the country spends $57,429 on each student, more than 3 times what the typical county spends.2
  • The very top of the list is mostly remote country rather than the places with the most money in them.2

School funding by state

In the typical state, the typical county spends about $16,458 on each student. In New York it is $27,684, in New Jersey it is $27,211.2

State legislatures set most of the money and local taxpayers add the rest, so two counties in one state can be thousands of dollars apart. A family choosing between counties is choosing which side of that gap to live on.2

How much schools spend on each student

Two towns in the same state, forty minutes apart. In one, a teacher who leaves in October is replaced by November and the science room has what the lesson needs. In the other, the class is covered by whoever is free that hour, and the same room has been waiting years for its equipment.

The typical US county spends about $15,513 a year on each student, and the 673 counties in the highest group all spend more.2

School spending by county

A state figure is one number for every family in the state, and the counties inside a single state run thousands of dollars apart. 673 counties across 45 states are in the highest spending group.2

Look up the county you live in now as well. A parent who is staying put still wants to know which side of that gap their own schools sit on.

Counties whose schools spend the most on each student

The top of the list is mostly remote country. A district that flies in supplies, heats a building through an Alaskan winter and runs a bus over long distances spends more on each student before a single lesson is taught.

Spending is high a long way before it gets this high: 673 counties across 45 states are in the highest group.2

Plenty of places fund their schools well. Start wide and narrow to the ones you would live in.
