Small class sizes. A teacher who knows your child by the end of the first week. A hand up that gets answered in the same lesson. A conference that runs late because there was something to say.
794 of 3,139 US counties have the smallest public school class sizes in the country, across 44 states.2
| Wish | Matching counties | Across the country in general |
|---|---|---|
| Small class sizes | 7942 | in the typical state, the typical county has about 13.4 students for every teacher2 |
We measure the students and the teachers in the public schools in the county, from the federal school file, and set one against the other. Students for every teacher is not the number of children in a room: the figure includes the teachers who take small groups and single subjects, so a class is usually bigger than the figure.
What stands out
- Counties with small class sizes are in 44 of all 51 states, so a family can look almost anywhere in the country and still find one.2
- The largest classes in the country have 29.3 students for every teacher, against 1.5 at the lowest.2
- The crowded end holds small rural counties, and Orange County, California, where the schools are as full as the county.0
Small class sizes by county
Two schools twenty minutes apart, same state, same funding, same pay scale. In one, a grade has nine children in it and the teacher calls home about a good week. In the other, thirty one sit in the room and a parent hears nothing from September to February.
794 counties across 44 states have the most teachers for every student.2
What a smaller class means for a child
A teacher with fewer children hands work back while a child still remembers writing it. A quiet child gets asked directly instead of getting through a whole week without speaking.
A parent gets the same thing from the other side: a teacher who can answer a question about one child without checking a list first.
