Editorial Staff · September 19, 2026
Make this a wish: Where Might I Live highlights US counties where you might find it, in search of YOUR happy place. Combine wishes for healthcare, prices, and more.
Free school meals for every student. Breakfast eaten at school before the day starts. The same tray at lunch as everyone else in the line. Nothing to fill out at the start of the year, and no balance to keep topped up.
Lawmakers in 9 states pay for both meals in 2026-27, which covers 431 of 3,143 US counties.1
| Wish | Matching counties | Across the country in general |
|---|---|---|
| Free school meals for every student | 4312 | 9 of 51 states pay; in the other 42 a family qualifies by income |
We read each state's own law and education department for the coming school year, and every county in a state that pays is a match. A state paying is not every school serving: in one of the nine, each district decides whether to take the money, so a family asks the district as well as the state.
What stands out
- Nine states pay for breakfast and lunch for every public school student in 2026-27: California, Colorado, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York and Vermont.1
- 2,712 of 3,143 US counties are in a state where a family still qualifies by income.1
- Universal means every student, so a family in 431 counties eats free whatever they earn.1
States with universal free school meals
Two families on the same road, one either side of a state line. Same pay, same two children, same packed lunch on a Monday. On one side both children eat breakfast and lunch at school and nobody is asked anything. On the other there is a form in August, a balance that runs down by Thursday, and a child who knows exactly which line is which.
431 counties across 9 states are on the side of the road where both meals are free.2
What free school meals are worth to a family
Two meals a day, five days a week, for every child in the house, from the first week of school to the last. A family that would have qualified anyway keeps the same food and loses the paperwork. A family earning slightly too much to qualify gains both meals outright.
Teachers and cooks serve the same food to everyone, so no child is grouped by what is on their tray, and no parent at that school is working out who is on which list.
Free school meals by county
Lawmakers pay for it statewide, so every county in those nine gets the same answer: 431 of 3,143 US counties.2
Ask the district as well as the state, and ask about the county you live in now while you are at it. One phone call answers both.
Nine states already pay for every student’s breakfast and lunch. Start with all of them and narrow to the places you would live.
